You are invited!

Hello from Dr. Brittany Knight- a 2013 LHU alumni you might remember. I took several classes and worked for the Biology Department while obtaining my B.S. in Psychology with a minor in Biology. I look back very fondly at my time at LHU and believe the education I received at LHU paved the path to my current success.

Since graduating, I obtained my PhD in Biomedical Science and a Postdoctoral fellowship in Biomedical Engineering both from the University of Connecticut. Currently I work for the United States Association for the Study of Pain and in my free time I co-lead a student led career development group, called Beyond the PhD, with another colleague Dr. Robert Pijewski.

On March 17th (5:30-7:30pm ET) Beyond the PhD will be hosting our fourth annual career and networking event "Building Your Brand" for students and trainees. Please share this event with students in your department, club officers, or other individuals that you think could benefit.

About Us

Beyond the PhD or formally known as Academia-Industry Opportunities Group (AIOG) is a student-led group that support peer-professional networking and career development in STEM. Founded in 2018 by Dr. Robert Pijewski and Dr. Giulia Vigone, at the time graduate student and postdoctoral fellows, they wanted to learn about their career options and address a need among their peers to find jobs outside of academia.

In the past, the academic career path was conventional for individuals pursuing graduate education in science however given the number of professorships available more PhDs are considering alternative careers outside academic institutions. The mission of AIOG is to provide opportunities for upper level undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellows to meet and communicate with scientific professionals in both academic and nonacademic careers.

Since Fall 2019, Beyond the PhD has been co-directed by Dr. Pijewski and Dr. Brittany Knight with a team of graduate students in the New England region. Since COVID-19, we have evolved our original on-campus group to a online career resource that provides monthly seminars, networking events, career development workshops and online resources to students on a global scale. Please visit our website for more information about our upcoming events.
