Helpful Tips

“When applying to graduate programs, look for programs to train you to be a good scientist, not the leading expert in “x”. Being a good scientist is transferrable, and you may learn later that you hate studying “x”.”

“When looking at finding graduate programs, first consider whether you want a teaching component or strictly research. Teaching assistantships are very valuable for preparing you for a career in academia.”

“I looked at umbrella programs because the programs allowed me to explore different labs to find the best fit. This also allows you to learn a variety of skills that you otherwise may not have if you apply directly to labs.”

“Someone told me that whatever your first idea is when you see the prompt, to throw it away and think of something different because likely someone else already had that idea and it isn’t very original.”
