The panel on April 26th featured four alumni of the UConn Health Biomedical Sciences PhD program at UConn Health Center in Farmington, Connecticut. The panelists shared their experiences transitioning from their academic training to various positions in industry.

From PhD to Science Reporter

Then science reporting might just be the right career for you, according to Dr. Angie Voyles Askham, a science reporter for Spectrum. Our paths crossed at a neuroscience conference when she wrote an article for Spectrum on my lab’s research. In a recent seminar for Beyond the PhD, Angie talked about her journey, and what made her transition from working at the bench to reporting about it.

Biochemist to Director for Portfolio Strategy at Cambridge Epigenetix

Beyond the PhD recently had the pleasure of hosting a seminar by Dr. Tom Charlesworth who serves as the Director for Portfolio Strategy at Cambridge Epigenetix. After obtaining his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Cambridge, he worked at a medical communications agency and the Wellcome Trust which allowed to gain a repertoire of non-scientific skills relevant to his current role at Cambridge Epigenetix. Read more here!

Upcoming Career Showcase: Medical Science Liaison

Beyond the PhD is excited to welcome Dr. Leia Shuhaibar, a Medical Science Liaison, for our first hybrid career discovery seminar on Tuesday May 17th at 1pm ET. This event will be streamed via Zoom, as with most of our recent events, but we will have the in-person portion on campus at UConn Health in conjunction with the Cell Biology Department.
